October 9, 2024; Miami, Florida; Tel Aviv, Israel; Sderot, Israel— Leaders from Genesis Friends for Life Global Foundation, in partnership with local community members, honored Avi Megera (z”l) at a special ceremony held this week in Israel.
Avi Megera, aged 48, was brutally murdered on October 7, 2023, during a terrorist attack in Sderot while returning home from a motorcycle trip. His family, friends, and community members will attend the ceremony as they commemorate his life and legacy.
Avi Megera, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend, was a long-time Sderot resident and a sales representative. Known for his generosity, positive spirit, and wisdom, Avi was deeply involved in his community. His love for life extended to his passion for motorcycling, a hobby that tragically ended during the attack.
Avi is survived by his wife, Michal, and his four children: Shaked, Ilai, Shalev, and Ori. His son, Shaked, a combat soldier in the Golani Brigade, spoke poignantly about the close bond he shared with his father and how deeply this tragedy affected the family.
“It was an honor to attend the ceremony,” said Dr. Lior Aviman, CEO of Genesis Friends for Life Foundation, an NGO based in Israel. “Over the last few months I’ve had the opportunity to spend time with the Megera family, as part of our Doron Grant for Life Program, providing educational, psychological, spiritual, creativity and the arts programs for this remarkable family as it continues to grieve and find the courage and strength to move on.”

As part of Genesis Friends for Life’s ongoing commitment to supporting orphans and widows impacted by the October 7 events, the Foundation has initiated various assistance programs for the Megera family, including academic and emotional support for Avi’s children. The family has also been invited to Miami in November to participate in the Friends for Life Ambassadors Trip, which will provide them with much-needed respite and growth opportunities.
